General Information
Participants: First time adaptive skiers will be individually evaluated to help identify what techniques and/or equipment are most appropriate. Use of the adaptive equipment (sit down devices and hand held outriggers) and individualized lessons are provided at no charge, but adaptive participants do have to buy their own lift ticket (just like other skiers do) from the ski resort. A half day lift ticket costs about $30. Adaptive skiers do get one free ski lift ticket that is used for the ski buddy (the instructor's helper). Adaptive skiers are welcome to bring along their own ski buddy if they wish. The ski buddy must be an intermediate level skier, ski without ski poles and they are expected to ski with their buddy and not go off and ski on their own. Ski Times: The typical start date is the first week after New Years, but this can vary depending on the weather conditions. We have sometimes skied right after Thanksgiving, but this is unusual. The season typically ends around the first week of March. We always prefer that people check the hot line for the latest information. We generally ski whenever the area is open. If the weather is EXTREMELY cold (usually near zero), we will give the adaptive skier the opportunity if they are properly dressed. Brandywine makes artificial snow as long as it is cold enough (below 30), so they are often open even if there is no snow on the ground. Volunteers: Skiing volunteers are always welcome. If you are an upper intermediate to advanced skier and have an interest in instruction, we provide training. If you prefer to be involved, but not in charge of lessons, you can become a ski buddy. If you do volunteer, you must agree to participate on a regular basis, you must be on time, and you must be willing to participate. Ski volunteers are provided free lift tickets while they are helping and may 'free ski' on their own only after their adaptive student lessons are completed and off the hill. Non-skiing volunteers are always welcome, especially on Sunday morning. These non-skiing volunteers will be asked to help with loading at the bottom of the ski lift (we call them boot loaders, but you can certainly invent a better name if you wish!) Instructors are either professionally certified or very experienced, expert skiers with extensive training. Our focus is safety ... fun ... and learning! |
